It's the week before Labor Day, and the Texas Progressive Alliance is hard at work bringing you the best of the Texas blogosphere. Here are this week's highlights.
The Texas Cloverleaf wonders why only one person showed up to a budget meeting where taxes are being increased in Denton County. No tea bags left?
Neil at Texas Liberal offered the fullest extension of the back of his hand to opponent's of Houston's Ashby High Rise.
TXsharon wonders what Governor Perry is thinking to appoint a global warming denier as the highest environmental official in Texas at a time when polling shows Americans support Obama on reducing greenhouse emissions and when the EPA has just confirmed water contaminated with hydraulic fracture fluid. Maybe the question should be: Does Perry think?
South Texas Chisme wants you to know that Medicare is a PUBLIC heath care option. Ciro, stand up. Henry, wise up.
Bay Area Houston has video of Republican Pete Olson punking himself punked at his own town hall meeting while trying to use a sick kid for political gain.
Lightseeker over at TexasKaos insists that we not hold health care reform hostage to solving the Abortion Wars. See this and more in his posting, Abortion Wars, Health care and Private Enterprise.
Off the Kuff analyzed some policy papers from Houston's leading Mayoral candidates, examining Gene Locke's crimefighting plan, Annise Parker's education plan, and Peter Brown's energy plan.
WCNews at Eye On Williamson posts about The good news health care reform would bring to TX-31 and Williamson County.
Setting a date for the eventual US Senate special election is all about the MoFo, according to PDiddie at Brains and Eggs.
This week, McBlogger asked a very good question... Why do we even care about Joe Lieberman?
At Texas Vox, Citizen Sarah reports on Houston Mayor and Senate Hopeful Bill White's Energy Security Policy, per his panel at Netroots Nation. Video included.
Teddy at Left of College Station covers the Chet Edwards town hall on health reform live from the Brazos Center, and then shares his thoughts on the town hall, and why a vocal minority is against health care reform. Left of College Station also covers the week in headlines: remembering Senator Ted Kennedy.

One Doth Protest. Literally, One Person In Denton County
With all the calls for Obama's head on a Volkawagen, one would think the local rabble would be protesting any tax increase that came to its attention. But alas, crazy is as crazy does.
The Denton County Commissioners Court has proposed a property tax increase for the next fiscal year. Ya know, a tax increase. The thing that local wing nuts have thrown tea at the court house for earlier this year over the federal government's antics. But apparently when the 5 member all-GOP Court offers up a public hearing for concerned citizens, nobody gives a damn. Well, one guy gave a damn.
Yes folks, exactly one person showed up to voice concern over a property tax increase. We are hoping perhaps they will get two people at the Sept 1st 7pm public hearing.

Texas Blog Roundup
School is starting, and the Texas Progressive Alliance is prepared as always to ace the test. Here is this week's roundup of blog highlights.
From TXsharon: Woo Hoo! EPA testing has now confirmed wells are contaminated “with various substances connected with gas drilling”--proof that hydraulic fracturing contaminates our drinking water. Even Motley Fool supports the FRAC Act and says industry is "crying wolf."
Should Texans care about NJ? The Texas Cloverleaf examines why the GOP thinks we should.
CouldBeTrue of South Texas Chisme says a 'Wise Latina' kicks Republican butt once again.
For a long time it has been universally agreed upon that people should engage in end-of-life planning, at least until right-wing pundits made end-of-life planning an easy but incidental target of their battle against health care reform. Xanthippas at Three Wise Men takes aim at these critics, and the very real harm they do to people with their dishonest and partisan attacks.
WCNews at Eye On Williamson shows why everyone must call their Represenatives and Senators because It’s time to end America’s health care emergency.
Off the Kuff spent the week following the Sharon Keller trial. He wasn't impressed by her defense.
Over at TexasKaos, jaxpagan gets us the scoop on Ted Poe's Town Hall meeting in a funeral parlor. Snark , with a wicked point!
At McBlogger, Harry Balczak takes a few moments to tell us what he thinks about Whole Foods and it's 'health care for all' hating CEO.
Neil at Texas Liberal is back from a two-week vacation that took him to Chicago, Kenosha, Wisconsin, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Dayton, Ohio and Northern Kentucky. This itinerary is consistent with a post Neil made earlier this summer encouraging folks to visit the industrial midwest. With vacation over, it's time now to think of school and swine flu. It sure would help if more working people had paid sick days to help manage getting sick themselves and having kids sick at home.
John Coby at Bay Area Houston has some questions to ask Congressman Pete Olson at his town hall mtg on Aug 29.
Some of the very worst of Texas was on full display last week, and PDiddie at Brains and Eggs documented the atrocities.
BossKitty at TruthHugger is still appalled at the chaos and conflict demonstrated by a Bi-Polar America trying to decide Who is Worthy of a Healthy Life and Who is Not.

Does Texas Care About New Jersey?
We popped on over to the Dallas Observer's Unfair Park today on our daily trek online. On the top right corner an ad was displayed talking about New Jersey? Hmm. We're in Texas, so why New Jersey? The ad is paid for by the Republican Governors Association targeting New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine for raising taxes and still having a $10 billion deficit. It directs you to http://www.jerseypays.com
New Jersey's previous GOP governors in recent times were Thomas Kean and Christie Todd Whitman. Not exactly the conservative wing nuts they would love to have these days. Corzine's current opponent Chris Christie isn't exactly along their lines, and is already accused of some shady shit, using his relationship with his former employer, the US Attorney's office, and is not friends with the unions.
But we are pretty sure nobody in Texas gives a rat's ass about whether or not Jon Corzine is running a state which is quite a bit more liberal and progressive than our own. In case you do, you are now informed about the mud slinging in liberal land that will surely come to haunt us the same way in 2010.

Why Whitey In Denton County Is Scared Of ACORN
Of course, ACORN is the boogey man. Poor minorities who come to your homes, registering voters, and taking away your freedom! Or at least, that is what Glenn Beck and FOX News claims. Even people at the northern burb town halls such as Pete Sessions.
In Dallas, the reality is total opposite. ACORN Dallas helps minorities with foreclosure issues, tax prep, and fending off predatory lenders. They mostly help the poor and lower middle income families of South Dallas, who want their neighborhoods to not look like a shit hole. And who do they typically vote for in partisan races to solve these issues? Democrats! Dun dun dun!
If that means registering people to vote and knocking on your door, so be it. Whitey in Denton County is scared they will move north and bring their brand of social justice with them, as minorities become middle class and move northwards. The selfish bastards in the GOP who run this county won't have it and will do anything to stop it, even if it means misinformation to the public and disruption of town hall meetings with their own Congressmen.

Texas Blog Roundup
Here we are in August, and like every other week it's time for another Texas Progressive Alliance blog roundup.
TXsharon needs your help to Expose This Dirty Video.
CouldBeTrue of South Texas Chisme calls out KBH and the GOP for using racism and the NRA to get out the vote in 2010. Having a competent, experienced Latina judge? Not important.
Off the Kuff reminds us that Governor Perry's consistently wrong decisions regarding unemployment insurance will cost the state two billion dollars, maybe more.
McBlogger takes a look at a lawsuit against TRS and discovers losses, possible corruption and a nightmarish problem for the Republicans in 2010.
John Coby says you better think before you trust a republican with your family's health care.
Mean Rachel decides that Democratic gubernatorial candidate is still too Bush League for her tastes.
Our governor is living the life of the rich and famous. It does so on our dime and on the "dimes" of his fat cat contributors. Libby Shaw gives us the ulgy details over at TexasKaos, Our Kept Governor to the Unemployed: Eat Cake.
Why did Ciro Rodriguez vote against the Waxman-Markey climate change bill and then suddenly flee the House? And why is he taking grip-and-grin meetings with David Dewhurst? PDiddie at Brains and Eggs would really like to know.
Vince at Capitol Annex tells why he believes that the smart money is on Texas Governor Rick Perry picking Lt. Governor David Dewhurst to replace U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison if she resigns before the end of the year.
Neil at Texas Liberal posted a video he made that will take only 39 seconds your life to watch. Also, Neil made a post marking the third anniversary of Texas Liberal. Texas Liberal has run 1500 page views a day so far this year and had racked-up over 725,000 views since it began. Thank you blog reading public!!
WhosPlayin notes that the City of Lewisville is cancelling its Cinco de Mayo celebration for 2010 due to budgetary concerns.
Dembones at Eye On Williamson points out Rep. John Carter's latest nuttiness, Franking Commission draws the line on Rep. Carter.
Mike Thomas at Rhetoric & Rhythm reviews Debra Medina's campaign video and deems her the Sarah Palin of South Texas.
Teddy of Left of College Station was forced to evacuate his home in Bryan due to a warehouse fire that was burning toxic materials, but was able to return to his home the next day. Before the evacuation Teddy was able to write about Michael Vick’s return to the NFL, and whether or not he deserves a second chance. Left of College Station also covers the local and progressive events in the Bryan-College Station this month.
If nuclear power companies are already having trouble with their credit ratings, why are Texans rushing to throw them billions for plants that even the builders can't finance themselves? Good question, says Citizen Sarah at Texas Vox.

A 9 Year Old's Common Sense
The city of Denton tabled a special use permit for gas wells in the city, next to a park and hospital, again last evening. But the most common sense on the issue comes from 9 year old Zoe Neale in a letter to the DRC on Monday.
"A young perspective Hi. My name is Zoe. I am 9. If you put up the gas wells, I can't go outside and play. It will pollute the air and I could get sick. I live so close to the park that I can walk there and the wells are going to be right across the street from that. I play there all the time with my friends, so please don't put up the gas wells.
Zoe Neale, Denton "
Nuff said.
NTTA Blowing More Of Our Money
Dallas Blog is reporting NTTA is now looking for a $110k salaried civil engineer, even after pleading poverty and raising our tolls. NTTA and TxDOT will pay for it with our money.
This comes on the heels of John Wiley Price's batshit crazy comments about NTTA's contracting practices being racist.
Looks like the toll authority is going to keep getting the heat until they change their ways.

More Roads More Tolls In DFW
Two new toll projects were completed by NTTA and TxDOT and opened this past weekend. The Lake Lewisville toll bridge and 161 Tollway now provide drivers a couple new traveling options.
These two are a mixed bag. The161 toll extends the Bush Turnpike from Irving into Grand Prairie. It will cost an additional $1 with the toll tag. The lake bridge connects small but growing suburbs of Little Elm and Lake Dallas, with a new route between I-35 and the North Dallas Tollway. It is also a $1 tag price.
Drivers will have to weigh convenience over price in both cases. And local residents end up with more traffic, but possibly more economic development. Another case of new vs. old. But we still wonder why these two projects are tolls. If anyone can sufficiently explain how roads that initially received taxpayer bond money turned into toll projects, we are all ears/eyes.
Perry's Pending Holy War
This is one more reason why Governor Rick 39% Perry needs to be defeated in 2010. CBS11 reports his disturbing comments:
"Freedom of religion is not to be confused with freedom from religion," Perry said Sunday during remarks at New Life Christian Center in San Antonio. Perry told church members that a great spiritual battle was under way for the future of the state and nation. Perry noted that he prays every day for President Obama -- "that God will touch his heart, that he will open his eyes."
Sorry, Tricky Rick. We hold onto our beliefs just as much as you (although we actually stick with our opinions, and do not change them to suit the audience). And we do not wish to have your warped brand of Christian values shoved down our throats. This kind of rhetoric, suggesting someone is less Godly, is exactly the kind that had someone walk into a church and shoot a doctor in cold blood. Governor 39%, you should be ashamed.
