Bipartisan Group of Former Court of Criminal Appeals Staff Attorneys Endorse Keith Hampton

This comes on the heels of the Dallas Morning News endorsement of  Democrat Keith Hampton for Texas Court of Criminal Appeals..........

Yesterday, a bipartisan group of twelve former Texas Court of Criminal Appeals staff attorneys from across the state endorsed attorney and Democrat Keith Hampton over incumbent Judge Michael Keasler for Place 6 on the Court.  Citing Mr. Hampton’s extensive criminal law experience and lifelong commitment to justice for all, the group of six former staff attorneys to Republican judges and six to Democratic judges put partisanship aside in favor of what is best for the Texas judicial system.

“I am very honored to have gained the trust of such a highly respected group of attorneys,” Hampton said “The bipartisan nature of this group alone is so encouraging.  I take from their vote of confidence that those people who know the Court of Criminal Appeals the best see that it needs change, regardless of party.”

The list includes former staff attorneys to Republican Court of Criminal Appeals Judges Barbara Hervey, Cheryl Johnson, Mike McCormick, and Lawrence Meyers; and Democratic CCA Judges Charlie Baird, Sam Houston Clinton, Leon Douglas, Rusty Duncan, and Chuck Miller. The full list of endorsing attorneys is below.

“Once the election ends, the robe goes on, the partisanship ends, and my job becomes restrained application of legal precedent,” Hampton said.

Keith Hampton has practiced criminal law in Texas for over twenty years. If elected, Hampton would be the only Court of Criminal Appeals judge to try all aspects of death penalty cases, including in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. A graduate of the University of Texas and St. Mary’s School of Law, Hampton has clerked for the Court of Criminal Appeals and lobbied for criminal justice reform at the Texas Legislature on behalf of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA). In addition to repeated recognition from Best Lawyers and Texas Super Lawyers, Hampton has been awarded the TCDLA President’s Award seven times. A native of Burkburnett, Texas, Hampton lives in Austin with his wife, Cynthia, and daughter, Rebekah.

The Court of Criminal Appeals is the highest criminal court in Texas and hears all criminal appeals, including capital cases. Judges on the Court of Criminal Appeals are elected statewide and currently all seats on the Court are held by Republicans. For more information about the race, visit www.hamptonforjudge.com
