Denton County Representative Files For Speaker

Adding to the already wide open Texas House Speaker's race, Denton County's own Burt Solomons (R-Carrollton) of House District 65 has filed to run against Tom Craddick.

Solomons has been the representative since 1995, and has never had a Democratic opponent. His district does have some shades of blue in the Dallas precincts and some of the Carrollton ones, but there is overwhelming red in the rest of the precincts in Frisco, Plano, Castle Hills, and northern Carrollton. The Chair of the Financial Institutions Committee does seem a logical choice for the GOP side for Speaker of the House.

There will probably be opposition to Solomons within his own party of course, maybe even his own county. Myra Crownover (R-Denton) of House District 64 tried to pass a statewide smoking ban in 2007, which Solomons opposed. So, even his own neighboring colleague may not be happy to have him running the show.

We still hope for a Democratic Speaker of the House, but with a 1 seat majority still held by the GOP, it still seems unlikely.
