Blog Action Day: Poverty

Today is Blog Action Day. 2008's theme is poverty, and ways bloggers can highlight the issue.

Poverty in the United States has always been a problem. It just becomes a matter of whether or not someone wants to do something about it, or choose to completely ignore it.

The most recent public figure to highlight the problem was Democratic candidate John Edwards. In addition to talking about the problem publicly, he helped found the University of North Carolina's Center on Poverty, Work, and Opportunity, a division of the School of Law.

But we want to focus on what you can do, right this second, to help combat poverty. Billions of dollars are raised and spent on political campaigns in this country. If individuals and PACs spent as much time raising and spending that money on poverty issues as they do on political wind bags, a lot could be done in this country. So instead of continuing to give Obama $50 every day when his political director asks for it, consider taking that $50, just once, and donating it to local charities.

We personally like helping the North Texas Food Bank when we can. The food bank is a non profit serving 13 North Texas counties-- an area that has almost 700,000 people living below the poverty line. Donating $1 to NTFB allows for 5 meals or $10 worth of food. There aren't many places in this country right now where you can turn a dollar into ten. The food bank typically gets a lot of donations around the holidays, but they need help year round and not just Thanksgiving and Christmas.

So think about it. Your $50, that could be spent on attacking Sarah Palin's empty head, could be turned into 250 meals for needy North Texans. And even if you don't live in North Texas, you can find a food bank at a location near you.
