Save The Earth- Don't Mess With Texas!

Another entry in our attempt at saving the earth on this Earth Day weekend. We joined the Stonewall Democrats of Denton County today, and helped clean up their TxDOT approved Adopt-A-Spot. Any organization who agrees to help clean up Texas highways, can apply to adopt a 2 mile stretch of road (yes it is daunting!). They then like for you to pick up trash 4 times a year minimum. Local TxDOT offices supply you with pretty orange vests, plastic trash bags, and then come pick up your trash when you're done. You then get 2 large blue signs with your organizations name on it- which is basically free advertising for you.

Stonewall Democrats of Denton County adopted a spot on FM 455 from Sanger to Bolivar. This is also known to most people as BFE. Only 6 of us were wise (dumb) enough to go out there this morning and start picking up some trash. 2 hours later, we collected 15 bags of trash that weighed at least 20-30 pounds a piece. Most of the items were plastic bottles, cans, plastic bags, cigarette packs. Some of the more intriguing items were a license plate, 2 tires with 1 complete rim, an entire front end fender of a car, metal sign post, Tejano cd, gay porn dvd and unused condoms. Granted with 6 of us in 2 hours we did not even complete the entire stretch of road. While driving by the highway, you simply do not see how dirty it really is until you get down in the reeds and start bending over. And most of the trash is completely recyclable stuff.

It makes you wonder what goes through the mind of the guy driving down this rural stretch of road drinking his Keystone Light, smoking his Marlboro, and staring at his new gay porno he just had to have. All of this went out the car window!

Just remember folks. Save the earth. Don't be a litter bug and don't mess with Texas!
